That means it wasn’t just wrong, the reporter was reckless or had no right to say it. Clients sometimes demand “retraction” when all they want is a correction. When I was a reporter, I had sources throw the R Word around, which got my back up, when they just wanted a simple correction.

These days, you can also ask to fix it in the file so it’s not called up and repeated. I’ve let boo boos stand uncorrected, just to see it again months later when a reporter used the original story as the basis for an update. If you don’t want to see the error again, ask for the correction to be made in the electronic version.

At the same time, don’t demand fixes for every minor error. Be strategic.
